Chinese driver rams car into crowd, killing 35 in rare attack BNN Bloomberg
(Bloomberg) — Chinese police said at least 35 people died after a driver crashed into a crowd in a southern city, marking the country's deadliest attack in at least a decade.
The man, surnamed Fan, drove into a sports center and crashed into pedestrians around 7:48 p.m. Monday in Zhuhai, state broadcaster China Central Television reported, citing the local public security bureau. The suspect acted because he was unhappy with the division of property resulting from his divorce, video surveillance showed, adding that he was harming himself in the car when police arrested him. He is receiving treatment and cannot be questioned by police, CCTV added.
The incident is the country's deadliest since knife-wielding attackers ransacked a train station in the southwestern city of Kunming in March 2014, killing 29 people.
Zhuhai is hosting the China International Aviation and Aerospace Expo until November 17, and President Xi Jinping has ordered local authorities to ensure public safety and social stability. The Chinese leader, who leaves the country on Wednesday for a summit of Asia-Pacific leaders in Peru and the Group of 20 in Brazil, called for all-out efforts to treat those injured and demanded that perpetrators be punished in accordance with the law. the official Xinhua news agency said.
China is seeking to attract foreign businesses and lure tourists after years of pandemic isolation, but crime has become a concern of late. The murder of a young Japanese man in Shenzhen earlier this year sparked tensions between Beijing and Tokyo.
