Reviews | Should Democrats try to work with Trump?

Reviews | Should Democrats try to work with Trump?

To the editor:

Re Dont Surrender and Call It Compromise, by Jamelle Bouie (december 22 column):

Isn't Mr. Bouie still exhausted by resentment? The fury against every thought of Donald Trump? The barrage of fundraising emails and doomsday scenarios triggered by cabinet appointments or policy suggestions?

As a Democratic voter who donated money, wrote postcards, and traveled out of state to knock on doors for Harris-Walz, I say we need to step back. Let's see what happens rather than assuming the worst and bond more closely.

If the Trump administration unleashes the chaos and pain we have come to expect, let its voters witness, experience, and repent for what they have done. If this chaos does not occur, any catastrophizing on the part of the Democrats will seem unjustified and will therefore be doomed to failure. Regardless, circumspection will put the party on a firmer footing to reclaim its legitimacy in the midterms and beyond.

To the editor:

I completely agree with Jamelle Bouie. I'm a Democrat and the Democratic Party makes me angry.

Some Democrats want to work with a new criminal president and find common ground. There isn't one. Donald Trump was supported by billionaires and voted for by a bewitched electorate who believed his lies. His goals are tax cuts for the rich and tariffs for the rest of us. Does this sound democratic?

Democrats should do what Sen. Mitch McConnell did to former President Barack Obama. Mr. Obama came into office thinking he could work across the aisle. Mr. McConnell's goal was to make Mr. Obama a one-term president. He didn't succeed, but he did prevent Mr. Obama from reaching his full potential as president.

Democratic politicians, please fight, don't bend, or the party will flounder forever.

To the editor:

Jamelle Bouie provides an excellent game plan for resolute but responsible opposition to the Trumpian madness that will soon descend on our country.

Relentless criticism of the Trump administration's policies and actions will not only reveal Donald Trump's efforts to place anarchy at the center of American government. It will also be an opportunity for the American people to see and evaluate Democratic politicians who aspire to higher office.

The Democratic Party has a strong group of articulate young leaders who can, through their critiques, showcase their oratory skills and commitment to the values of the Democratic Party.

How the United States benefits from trade with China

To the editor:

In What Economists Could Learn From Seinfeld (guest essay, December 24), Oren Cass writes that economists were wrong to welcome China into the global economic system. He says American workers are worse off, not better.

Clearly, Americans have benefited from globalization, particularly in China. China provides us with many very cheap products that we could not otherwise afford. And the Chinese buy our high-tech products, like planes (and our movies).

If American workers are worse off, it is not so much because of the decline of manufacturing due to Chinese competition. This is because a much larger share of economic profits went to the owners of capital (shareholders and CEOs) rather than to workers. This is not China's fault; this is a failure of capitalism and an example of why we need a higher minimum wage.

And to top it all off, even after doing the complete opposite of what his instincts told him, George Costanza continued to be the same jerk he always was on Seinfeld, albeit with a more interesting occupation.

Rising rates of autism

To the editor:

New study supports vaccines against increase in autism. So what's behind this? (press article, December 25):

As a behavioral and developmental pediatrician with over four decades of experience, I think this article forgets to mention the most important reason why autism rates have skyrocketed over the past 20-plus years.

He cites expanded diagnostic criteria and increased awareness, but not that diagnosing autism is the key to getting insurance companies to support primary autism intervention, applied behavior analysis or ABA treatment, one of the few effective treatments for autism.

What is generally less known is that most behavior problems in a toddler or preschooler will respond to ABA treatment. Pediatricians and pediatric psychologists feel the pressure to make an autism diagnosis. While in the past they might have diagnosed the child with a developmental or language delay, now that he is showing signs of even borderline autism, evaluators will direct the diagnosis toward autism. This is another case of following the money.

In awe of Schubert

To the editor:

Re Schubert is the best remedy I know for loneliness, by Jonathan Biss (guest essay, nytimes.com, December 28):

Mr. Biss's wonderful analysis of Schubert's last three piano sonatas recalls Beethoven's last three sonatas. Both he and Schubert grappled, with their own musical voices, with similar questions about mortality, physical and emotional challenges, and, ultimately, acceptance. Consider Beethoven's final piano sonata (Op. 111), which begins with a tone of anger and defiance and ends with transformative serenity and beauty.

I have to believe that they each appreciated the importance of the other's work, particularly the way each was able, through masterful use of sound and silence, to express their emotional struggles.

They expressed universal feelings that we all face. It's no wonder these masterpieces still have so much impact today.

To the editor:

I found the three sonatas mentioned by Jonathan Biss on a CD, and I am very happy to have discovered them (thanks to him).

The final movement of Schubert's D. 958 simply beggars belief. It is not only beautiful, but uplifting and inspiring. That this music of joy and hope was written by a young man less than two months after his death, I find it difficult to understand.

Thanks for posting articles like this.

A common bond, thanks to the Times

To the editor:

I am writing to share a reflection on a recent holiday gathering of my family blending many diverse perspectives and lifestyles.

Within our extended family, we have liberals and conservatives, each with their own strong opinions. Some are vegetarians while others are devoted carnivores. Our family includes those who pray the rosary daily and those who identify as agnostic. We have self-proclaimed foodies who savor the latest culinary trends and unapologetic junk food addicts. Our ages range from teens to 70s.

When we come together, the conversation can become lively, passionate, and often divided into special interest groups.

What I noticed was the one topic of conversation that united us all: the New York Times games Wordle, Connections, the Mini, and Strands.

Thank you, New York Times, for doing something that peacemakers have been trying to do for centuries, giving us a common bond that transcends differences and generations!

Recognize the work of local calls

To the editor:

Israel eased limits on strikes, increasing risks for civilians in Gaza (front page, December 27) expands on original reporting by Local Call, a Hebrew-language news outlet, and +972 Magazine, a news site Israeli-Palestinian. Although The New York Times reviewed military records, conducted its own interviews, and accurately credited +972 magazine, it failed to credit Local Call, which played a critical role in the investigation.

Local Call was founded in April 2014 and has since been recognized as one of the most important media outlets in Israel by the country's leading journalists and editors. As the only media outlet in Israel that systematically publishes writings by Palestinian and Gazan writers, it has become a window into the gratuitous bombing of Gaza over the past 16 months and a pioneer of investigative journalism that exposes politics and mechanisms that fuel Israel's war.

It's important to us that Local Call is recognized for the vital work its journalists and team have done over the past horrific year.
