The president of the University of Columbia resigns in the midst of Trump's repression

The acting president of the University of Columbia resigned from his role only a week after the Ivy League University agreed to change several policies to meet the requests of the Trump administration.

Katrina Armstrong had managed the university since August, after the previous president resigned from her treatment of demonstrations against the Israeli military operation in Gaza.

Last week, Columbia accepted several requests from the Trump administration, including a ban on facial masks during demonstrations and a change in surveillance of certain academic programs, after the administration said it had planned to retain millions of federal funds.

It is not known whether the funds will be reintegrated, although a prosecution has been brought by part of the school faculty on the cuts.

The New York College was the epicenter of pro-Palestinian demonstrations against the war in Gaza and the American support for Israel on university campuses last year.

It was not only Columbia who faced funding cuts. The Trump administration has warned 60 universities that funding can be canceled if anti -Semitism allegations on campuses are not addressed.

Earlier this month, Linda McMahon, secretary of education, announced that she was drawing federal funding due to “incessant violence, intimidation and anti-Semitic harassment” which had been “ignored” by the university authorities.

All this comes in the wake of the high -level arrest of Mahmoud Khalil, a graduate of Columbia and activist of the campus. He was arrested by the federal immigration authorities at the beginning of the month.

Mr. Khalil, a legal permanent resident, faces the expulsion for his role in campus demonstrations in 2024.

Trump has repeatedly said that Mr. Khalil and other pro-Palestinian activists support Hamas, a group appointed a terrorist organization in the United States.
