The Turkish court rejects the appeal for the release of the keys to the prison rival Erdogan
Ankara, Türkiye Judicial leaders rejected on Monday a appeal requesting the release of the mayor of Istanbul, Ekrem Imamoglu, of the prison pending the outcome of his corruption trial, reported the country's public news agency.
Imamoglu, a leading opposition figure and a key challenger by President Recep Tayyip Erdogans more than the two decades, was arrested on March 19 and officially imprisoned for corruption four days later.
His arrest is largely perceived as being politically motivated, aimed at sidelining a large rival before the presidential elections, which are currently planned for 2028 but could take place earlier.
The judgment of mayors and the subsequent withdrawal of functions have sparked the largest wave of antigan -government demonstrations in Türkiye in more than a decade. The government insists that the judiciary operates independently and without political interference.
On Monday, the criminal court of Istanbul of first instance decided to reject the calls launched by the lawyers of Imamoglus, deciding that its detention would continue, reported the Anadolu agency.
The lawyers representing the mayor had argued that the investigation into Imamoglu would have been carried out in violation of legal standards. They should renew the request for an appeal.
The court also rejected the requests for appeal for Murat Ongun, the president of a media company affiliated with the municipality of Istanbul and a close imamoglu assistant and other suspects who were arrested for corruption alongside the mayor, said the agency.
A lawyer representative Imamoglu could not confirm the report, saying that the decision had not been officially communicated to him.
