PRIME MINISTER Imran Khan has appointed lawyer Naeem Bukhari as chairman of the public broadcaster PTV. Even before taking charge of his new office, Mr Bukhari, himself a television personality, told reporters that PTV would not provide any cover for the opposition because it is supposed to project the government. In a recently released video statement, he reiterated that PTV’s main objective is to project the government. Mr. Bukhari is wrong. But sadly, he’s not the only one to have misconceptions about the role of a state broadcaster. The PTI is the latest in a long line of ruling parties that insisted on PTV reform when in opposition and then refuted such pious intentions once in power. If PTV is today a white elephant struggling for its relevance in a rapidly changing media environment, it is due to the myopic vision and misunderstanding of those responsible for overseeing the official media imposed on them. However, in this case, it is the Prime Minister himself who shares most of the burden. His party manifesto boasted of reforming the PTV when it came to power, and Mr Khan has said the same publicly when he was in opposition. From these noble intentions to the cavalier declarations of Mr. Boukharis, the PTI has indeed come a long way.

This is also the wrong way. The modern world has no room for archaic organizations like a state broadcaster that generates no content other than outdated and crass government propaganda. Instead, what is called a public broadcaster has value. The main examples of taxpayer funded public broadcasters are Britains BBC, Canadas CBC and Americas NPR. A public broadcaster primarily serves the needs of citizens, not the government. Freed from the confines of commercial content, it carries a mandate to produce high quality, credible and trustworthy content that adds value to the lives of citizens. A public broadcaster enriches democracy by providing people with responsible and ethical information that reinforces social and cultural values ​​while ensuring that viewers are not deprived of the authentic information they need as citizens of a state democratic. Very few of our political parties seem to have a nuanced understanding of the role of public broadcasters. This is why Pakistanis are forced to bear the burden of PTV and endure the rigors of official propaganda tastefully spewed out by unqualified people like Mr. Bukhari.
