More table tennis gold offered for Aust
Ma Lin gets the chance to take down his former Chinese teammates after leading Australia to the men’s table tennis final at the Tokyo Paralympic Games.
Ma, who won silver in his singles a few days earlier, paired with Joel Coughlan to beat Nigeria 2-0 in Wednesday’s semi-final.
Coughlan and Ma won the doubles three-to-one, before Ma backed up to win his singles in a five-set thriller.
Ma came from two sets behind and defeated Tajudeen Agunbiade 8-11 9-11 11-3 11-9 11-8.
Coughlan was not needed for the other singles match as Australia already had an unassailable 2-0 lead in the tie.
Ma had already won team gold while competing for China in the 2008, 2012 and 2016 Paralympic Games.
But this time, he will be up against the table tennis powerhouse after switching his allegiances to Australia after Rio 2016.
Ma, who lost his right arm as a child when he was bitten off by a bear at a Chinese zoo, will now focus on recovery ahead of Friday’s final rather than thinking too much about including his former teammates.
“For me it doesn’t matter who is on the other side of the table, they are all my opponents and I will do my best,” he said.
“After yesterday’s two games, I felt very tired today and I haven’t fully recovered from yesterday. I just tried my best today and I didn’t give up.
“With a day off, I can now recover well for the final.”
Coughlan, a 33-year-old Paralympic debutant from North Queensland, is delighted to compete for the gold medal.
“We had a bit of a nervous start (in the semi-finals) and we missed some easy balls, but once we got into a groove we developed well again and won,” said Coughlan.
“As we all know, China is always the best in table tennis. It will be a tough competition.
“I faced one of them in my singles and got really close, so hopefully we can cross the line this time.”
Australia’s 37-year gold medal drought in Paralympic table tennis came to an end on Monday after naturalized Australians Lina Lei and Qian Yang won their respective women’s singles finals.
