Legendary LHS tennis coach Kenny Moore gets his girls geared up for a state championship game – LaGrange Daily News
The LaGrange High School girls’ tennis team prepares for a state championship game against Marist on Saturday. Kenny Moore has racked up 897 wins as head tennis coach, but the most important has remained elusive. Moore led the girls Grangers team to the championship game in 2013, but the Grangers didn’t win the game.
We’ve won a number of regional championships and we’ve gone to the last four many times, Moore said. I’ve been the coach here for many years and since I’ve been the coach we’ve won 897 matchups so it would be cool to get 898 Saturday.
Moore has been the head coach for many different varieties of Granger tennis since he took over in 1991.
This was supposed to be a year of rebuilding, Moore said. We had a group of three girls who graduated last year and who were starters on the team for four years.
It was anything but a rebuilding year for the Grangers as the team exceeded Moore’s expectations. Senior Sydney Edelson’s strong play is one of the reasons the Grangers are performing above their expected level.
Sydney is our best player, Moore said. She has worked so hard on her game.
Edelson is the No. 1 singles player for the Grangers and takes on the arduous task of playing against the best player on the opposing team.
Sophie Nix has also been one of the reasons, as she hasn’t lost a single game all season. She is the teams No. 2 singles player.
She’s gotten so much better, Moore said. You have to be a lot better than her to beat her.
Nix has had such a hot streak this season that Moore barely remembers a time she even dropped a game.
The Grangers have four senior leaders on the team, which helped propel LaGrange into the championship game. Adeline Lanier, Maddie Nolan and Ayaka Kimura are the other three seniors on the team besides Edelson. Their game and uplifting spirit on the pitch have helped the younger Grangers.
All four of those seniors have provided us with good leadership, Moore said.
Nolan and Limura are the teams No. 1 double clutch. Minchae Kim and Abby Grace Kornek are the other doubles players on the team. Lanier is the team’s third singles player.
The Grangers have all five matchups at the same time on Saturday. When one of the teams wins three of the five lines, as they are called, a state champion is declared. The matches will be held at 9:00 am at the Rome Tennis Center in Berry College
Marist is very good, Moore said. They are the elite of the state, but we look forward to going there and seeing what we can do against them.
