Former Owatonna goalkeeper commits to Gopher’s men’s hockey team
Zach Wiese, a former Owatonna High School goalkeeper who spent the past two seasons in the Tier III NA3HL, announced on Twitter Monday that he has committed to play for the Gophers men’s hockey team.
Wiese, 20, could fill the No. 3 goalie spot behind junior starter Justen Close and sophomore backup Owen Bartoszkiewicz entering the 2022-23 season. Brennan Boynton, last season’s third-string goalkeeper for the Gophers, entered the transfer portal.
Wiese was the 2021-22 NA3HL Goalkeeper of the Year for the Rochester Grizzlies, setting a 20-2-2 record averaging 1.70 goals conceded, a save rate of 0.927 and four shutouts. He also played one game this year for the Austin Bruins of the NAHL. In 2020-21, Wiese went 13-3-1 with a 1.83 GAA, .920 save percentage and three shutouts for Rochester.
The 5-10, 209-pound Wiese went 17-5 with a 1.72 GAA ,913 save percentage and three shutouts in 2019-20 as a senior Owatonna.
Gophers well represented on camp schedule
USA Hockey has announced the roster of 60 players for the National Junior Evaluation Camp, and the Gophers have invited seven current or incoming players.
The camp, which will run from July 24 to Aug. 24, 3, will help select the U.S. roster for the World Junior Championships, August 9-20 in Edmonton, Alberta.
Gophers defender Brock Faber of Maple Grove and forward Matt Knies of Phoenix, who played for Team USA last winter in both the pandemic-shortened World Juniors last winter and the Beijing Olympics, will return to the junior national team. They join five new Gopher freshmen: attackers Logan Cooley of Pittsburgh, Connor Kurth of Elk River, and Jimmy Snuggerud of Chaska; and defender Ryan Chesley of Mahtomedi and Luke Mittelstadt of Eden Prairie. Grant’s former Gopher Chaz Lucius was also invited.
Minnesota Duluth has four invitees: current Bulldogs forward Blake Biondi of Hermantown and Dominic James of Plymouth, Michigan, and defenseman Wyatt Kaiser of Ham Lake; along with incoming freshman forward Isaac Howard of Hudson, Wisconsin. Former Bulldogs defender Connor Kelley of Maple Grove, who transferred to Providence, also received an invite.
St. Cloud State defenseman Jack Peart, a Wild conscript from Grand Rapids, Minnesota, received an invite, as well as Notre Dame striker Justin Janicke of Maple Grove, upcoming Wisconsin striker Charlie Stramel of Rosemount, and upcoming North Dakota striker Jackson Blake , who played for Eden Prairie.
