Burnel and Isqueiro earn All-WAC honors for men's tennis
RIO GRANDE VALLEY The Western Athletic Conference (WAC) announced this on WednesdayEmilien Burneland freshmenIvo Isqueiro,of the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) men's tennis team, earned All-WAC First Team and All-WAC Second Team Singles honors, respectively.
Burnel, the team captain, went 3-1 in WAC play and was 11-10 overall in the No. 1 singles match this spring. He went 14-12 overall in 2023-2024 with a selection to the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Men's All-American Championship in the fall. He defeated #88Joan Torres Espinosaof UT Arlington in straight sets and Texas Tech'sJonas Gundacker.
Burnel is a fourteen-time winner of the weekly or monthly WAC award, earning six this season, including two in the fall and four in the spring. He was a two-time Player of the Week in singles and a two-time Player of the Week in Doubles this spring. This is his second consecutive All-WAC First Team Singles honor and he also earned All-WAC Second Team Doubles last year, in addition to a selection to the WAC All-Tournament Doubles Team.
Isqueiro went 2-2 in WAC play and finished the regular season on a strong note, moving into second place and winning a pair of games against UT Arlington'sDante Teramoand Abilene Christian'sMihaly Deli.Isqueiro is 9-13 overall this spring and 10-19 for the 2023-24 season, playing in flights two-six during his freshman year. He spent most of his time in flight No. 3, going 5–4, before earning a move up in the lineup.
Burnel and Isqueiro also formed a strong No. 1 doubles duo, going 3-1 in WAC play and 9-4 overall this spring.
The #5 Vaqueros (8-16) will face the #4 Seattle U Redhawks in the quarterfinals of the WAC Tennis Tournament on Thursday at 9 a.m. at the HEB Tennis Center at Pendleton Park in Harlingen.
