Former England batsman and cricket administrator Raman Subba Row dies at the age of 92
FORMER England Test batsman Raman Subba Row has died aged 92.
Subba Row, who won the first of his thirteen England caps in 1958, played domestically for Cambridge University, Surrey and Northamptonshire.
After retiring in 1961, he worked as a cricket administrator and match referee.
The England and Wales Cricket Board said Subba Row, who made three Test centuries and averaged 46.85, was England's oldest living men's player.
“He was a great cricket man and his remarkable cricket career saw success both on and off the field – as a player, official, administrator and chairman of both Surrey and the Test and County Cricket Board,” said ECB chairman Richard Thompson.
“Our sport owes him a huge debt of gratitude, and on behalf of the ECB we would like to express our sincere condolences to Raman's friends and family at this sad time.”
Subba Row was chairman of the Test and County Cricket Board, the predecessor of the ECB, for five years before moving into umpiring.
Between 1992 and 2001 he appeared in 41 Tests and 119 one-day internationals.
“Raman was a respected cricketer of his time,” said Wasim Khan, the chief executive of cricket at the International Cricket Council.
“He was also one of the first ICC match referees, who performed very ably in different parts of the world.” (BBC Sports)
