Artyom Levshunov has an important decision to make regarding the Michigan State hockey team
Michigan State hockey player Artyom Levshunov was selected second overall in the NHL draft by the Chicago Blackhawks on Friday night.
The Michigan State defenseman was projected to be selected No. 2 or No. 3 overall, so this pick wasn't a surprise, but he becomes only the third Spartan to ever be selected in the top five. He will also face a huge decision as he is about to receive a contract from the Chicago Blackhawks.
Now that Levshunov has a looming contract, he must decide whether to stay in the NHL or return to Michigan State for another season.
This is also a decision the Blackhawks have to make. I doubt they would draft someone No. 2 overall who wasn’t somewhat ready for the NHL ranks, but they could tell him he needs another year of development under Adam Nightingale. If that’s the case, the decision can more or less be made for him, but ultimately it’s still up to him.
We saw Trey Augustine get drafted by the Red Wings and decide to return to the Spartans for another year this season and Nightingale has even said that multiple players have chosen to turn down contracts to return for at least one more season.
If Levshunov decides to come back and close things out in the NCAA ranks with Michigan State, the Spartans will become national title contenders and perhaps Big Ten favorites again. But this decision could change the entire outlook for the 2024-25 season for Spartan hockey.
