Stranded in Barbados: T20 World Cup-winning Indian cricket team could return home on Tuesday | Cricket News
The Prime Minister of Barbados Mia Spot announced that the airport is expected to be operational again within six to twelve hours.
Barbados has been in lockdown since Sunday night following the life-threatening winds and storms brought by Hurricane Beryl. The Category 4 hurricane caused significant damage to coastal infrastructure. The Indian cricket team was unable to leave after winning the title with a seven-run victory over South Africa on Saturday. PM Mia Mottley has been actively involved in overseeing the relief efforts. She expressed optimism that normal airport operations will resume soon.
“We are hoping, and we are working towards getting there later today. I don't want to get ahead of myself, but I have literally been in touch with the airport staff and they are doing their final checks now and we want to get back to normal as soon as possible,” Mottley told PTI.
The disruption affects many plans: people want to leave late last night, today or early tomorrow morning.
“There are a number of people who were supposed to be leaving late last night or today or early tomorrow morning. And we want to make sure that we can help those individuals, so I expect the airport to be open within the next six to 12 hours,” she said.
Prime Minister Mottley also hoped that the Indian team, who have been staying in their hotel since winning the title, are in high spirits despite the circumstances surrounding their stay.
“I'm sure that despite the hurricane, they would have been in a very, very, very good mood and spirit and would have won in the same way as they did on Saturday. I think they'll be in the air for a while,” she noted.
Although the hurricane protected mainland Barbados, nearby islands and coastal areas suffered from the extreme weather.
“(We've) been working to make sure everyone is safe in Barbados, Barbadians and of course all the visitors who came for the Cricket World Cup. We were very fortunate that the storm didn't make landfall. The hurricane was 80 miles south of us, which limited the damage on land. But as you can see, we did have extensive damage to coastal infrastructure and coastal assets,” Mottley said.
The prime minister stressed the urgent need for recovery and clean-up efforts. The window for the Indian team to leave is tight, with another cyclone expected to arrive on Wednesday.
“It could have been a lot worse, but now is the time to do the recovery and the cleanup. We have another hurricane on Wednesday,” Prime Minister Mottley added.
The Indian team's victory marked the end of an 11-year ICC title drought and provided added joy despite being temporarily stranded in Barbados.
