Men's tennis wraps up day one of the Gonzaga Invitational
SPOKANE, Wash. The Portland men's tennis team closed out the first day of the Gonzaga Invitational Friday at the Stevens Center. Cade Fernando advanced to the quarter-finals of his singles draw and teamed with Tannor Binder to reach the final of the Doubles White Draw as the highlight of the day.
Fernando defeated Hubert Theriault 6-3, 2-6, 6-3 to advance to the quarter-finals with a meeting against Sebastian Medica of Idaho scheduled for Saturday. He and Binder defeated doubles teams from Montana and Montana State en route to the finals. In the final they will face Johnny Wilkinson and Duncan McCall from Montana.
Portland freshman Lucas Kimelman picked up a victory in top flight Blue Draw with a 6-7, 6-1, 6-1 comeback victory against Gonzaga's Kai-Luca Ampaw. Kimelman and Tom Garcia also earned a doubles victory in the Blue Draw with a 6-3 lead over a team from Montana State.
