No. No. 75 Guillermina Grant and No. 94 Aysegul Mert fell short during ITA Sectionals at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex. Grant reached both the singles and doubles title matches, while her doubles partner Mert lost her round of 16 singles match.
At ITA Sectionals, Mert and Grant faced Given Roach and Alejandra Cruz of Georgia Tech in the doubles title match. Roach and Cruz secured the first set 6-3, but Mert and Grant rallied from 6-3 in the second set, forcing a third set. In the tiebreak set, Roach and Cruz took the 1-0 (10-7) victory.
In the singles title match, Grant faced No. 81 Catherine Aulia of Tennessee. Aulia quickly won the match in consecutive sets 6-2, 6-3.
In the quarterfinals, Grant faced Valeria Ray of Vanderbilt and reached the semifinals with a 6–4, 6–3 victory. Mert joined Grant for their quarterfinal doubles match against Indiana's Nicole Sifuentes and Elisabeth Dunac. The second-year senior duo had two strong sets in a row and advanced to the doubles semifinals with a 6-2, 6-1 victory.
In the singles semifinals, Grant faced Ludmila Kareisova of Ole Miss. She had a strong first set, beating Kareisova 6-1. Kareisova gained some momentum in the second set, but Grant fought her way into the singles title match with a 6-4 victory.
In the doubles semi-finals, Mert joined Grant, who again faced Kareisova in the singles with partner Anaelle Leclercq-Ficher. The Bulldogs cruised through the first set with a 6-1 victory. However, Leclercq-Ficher and Kareisova fought back for a 6-4 victory in the second set. In the third set, Georgia eventually won 1-0 (11-9).
Despite these losses, Grant and Mert secured spots in the NCAA Individual Championships after their semifinal victory. They will join Vidmanova, ranked No. 2 in the ITA rankings, as they travel to Waco, Texas from November 19 to 24.
