WS Neal main football coach Hugh Fountain dies at 61
WS Neal main football coach Hugh Fountain died after a short fight with cancer, his son confirmed to Al.com on Monday evening.
He is now in his country house in heaven, said Troy Fountain. I'm sure. He was a great man of God.
Hugh Fountain, 61, was in his second term of office as head coach at his Alma Mater. His team went 5-7 last fall and reached the second round of the 4A-play-offs class.
The inhabitant of Brewton won 271 competitions in 37 years as head coach. He was 49-29 in his first seven-year term of office at WS Neal of 1989-1995 and was 18-17 three years after his second term of office.
Hugh Fountain was a great father, husband and coach, said veteran school coach Ronnie Cottrell, who was head coach at WS Neal in 1988. He represented the very best in our company. I can't believe he's gone. He had a life -changing influence on his teams and will be missed enormously. He was a blessing for so many others and especially me.
Fountain traveled to MD Anderson in Houston last week after he had received his diagnosis of cancer. WS Neal students came together in a show of support for Fountain when he left. According to a social media post of the school, at a powerful moment, the sun seemed clear about our students and our school, so that we remind us of that hope and strength are always with us.
Fountain played football in Troy and earned his first head coaching job at Evergreen in 1988. He returned to WS Neal the following year. After lending the Blue Eagles to a 12-2 record in 1995, he left to become a head coach at Charles Henderson.
He went 106-67 in 16 years and coached the Trojan horses and led the team to the play-offs 10 times. From there he went to Escambia County. In 10 years there, Fountain won 94 games and a few state titles.
He returned to WS Neal for the 2022 season.
Escambia County Schools are this week during the spring break.
