New Hope, new conference for experienced RBHS -Tennis

Riverside Brookfield High School Senior Nathaniel Smolarek is working on improving his serve this tennis season. For his fourth season and third about Varsity, there is still a feeling of starting over, especially with the bulldogs participating in the Upstate Eight conference.

I am excited to practice with my friends, and hopefully to get more competitions with the new conference. And hopefully win some matches, Smolarek said for the Bulldogs 3-2 seasonal victory March 21. IVE had a number of pretty good records over the years. Last year was a bit rough. [But] Losses are only learning experiences for the future.

The Bulldogs only have three seniors, but seven recurring starters Smolarek, this season no. 3 singles playing, second -year Humza Ahmad (no. 1 singles), second -year Linden Leander and Junior Charles Debutch (no. Ahmad and Leander played No. 1 Doubles Much of 2024. On the 2a Lyons Township Sectional they won their first match with 7-6 (9), 6-3 before they lost in the round of 16.

The biggest thing I am looking for this year is improvement, Ahmad said. I am just enthusiastic to improve my serve, my basin and just become a better player. And hopefully the results will follow.

Also returning this season is Ahmad's father, Umer Ahmad, who works as a voluntary assistant coach.

He really helps the program and everyone wants to succeed with him, McKinney said, personally after his first winning record. We have many improvements, everyone wants to do their best.

With the extensive line -up, others like Armstrong try to get the most out of their first Varsity opportunities.

I feel that everyone in the team is of each other, so that makes it easier to play, said Armstrong. I want to win most of my competitions and I want to be competitive.

LTHS Boys Tennis

After achieving class 2A All-State Doubles Honors in 2024, Lyons Township Junior Shay Sweigard will probably go back to singles.

I am absolutely better at singles than Doubles, Sweigard said. I just enjoy playing doubles. In general it is easier to win at the state.

Sweigard, Junior Rohan Nagale and Senior Fred Chen return from last year's line-up, who finished fifth in 2a (19 points), 7-2 in Duals and second to state champion Hinsdale Central in the West Suburban Conference Silver Division and the LT Sectional.

Seniors Quentin Bourgeois, Juniors Jackson Albee and Manny Gonzalez and Seniors Aidan Schilling and Aidan Hahn also return winners of Letters. First -year Mateja Nokic is one of the newcomers of Varsity.

[Sweigard, Nagale and Chen] His leaders and hard workers who help motivate the entire team to improve and have success, said second-year LTHS coach Clint Buetikofer. The Lions graduated in the 2024 State Runner-Up Doubles-Line-Up from Jack McLane and Mason Mazzone.

Nagale played singles during sectional years, won one game and came one win from the state before he lost 6-0, 6-0 in the quarterfinals. During last year's silver meeting, Sweigard-Powell (no. 1 double) and Chen-Mazzone (no. 2 Doubles) were champions. Nagale became second at number 2 singles.
