Cricket Australia announces national contract list with 23 players before 2025-26
Cricket Australia (CA) has unveiled his list of 23 players from gentlemen who have been set to receive national contracts for the 2025-26 season, with remarkable inclusions and surprising omissions. Young opener Sam Konstas, left-arm Spinner Matthew Kuhnemann and all-rounder Beau Webster have earned their first national contracts after having impressed selectors with striking versions. In the meantime, Sean Abbott, Aaron Hardie and Todd Murphy have missed it.
New faces deserve recognition
Konstas and Webster played an important role in Australia-triumphanty Border-Gavaskar Trophy campaign and, after a few years, helped reclaim the coveted title. Kunemann, on the other hand, excelled against Sri Lanka and secure his first CA contract.
Kuhnemannn's recent journey has been moved. He played the test series with a broken thumb, but was later declared suitable. However, his bowling campaign was reported for assessment before he was cleared by the ICC. His selection sees him catching up Murphy as the preferred successor to Nathan Lyon in the test team.
Selection and implications of the World Test Championship
The inclusion of Konstas and Webster in the contract list reinforces their argument for selection in Australia team for the World Test Championships Final against South Africa, which will be played in Lords on 23 June. With Cameron Green and Josh Inglis returning injuries, competition for places in the Australian XI remains proud.
One of the most striking omissions is Cooper Connolly. The Spin-Bowling Allrounder made his debut last year in all three formats and performed consistently. Nathan McSweeney, who was shown in Australia, the last two and played three tests against India, misses too.

Cas -head selector George Bailey gave insight into the selection decisions after the announcement.
“Matt (Kuhnemann) was again excellent in Sri Lanka, and we believe he can play a key role in the next 18 months,” said Bailey.
“In the case of Beaus, it turned out to be more than comfortable at the test level with both bat and ball. He adds an extra dimension in the field and at the balance of the side. With Cameron Green and Mitch Marsh return, there will be welcome and healthy competition for places for the World Test Championship and the West Indies Tours.”
