NASA Nominates First Woman to Lead Kennedy Space Center

On Wednesday, NASA administrator Bill Nelson announced that Janet Petro would replace Bob Cabana as the new director of the Kennedy Space Center, making her the first woman to lead the center.

“I’m honored to have been chosen to lead the Kennedy Space Center,” Petro said. “Being the second generation of my family growing up on the Florida Space Coast and working at the Kennedy Space Center, the growth of a multi-user spaceport as it prepares for Artemis and continues to launch commercial crew missions to the International Space Station. It’s really exciting to help. “

Petro was appointed Deputy Director in May after Kennedy’s Deputy Director since 2007 and Cabana promoted to NASA’s Deputy Director, who works directly with Nelson at Washington, DC’s headquarters.

“Janet has been a great partner to lead Kennedy for the past 14 years. I’m happy she will take over in a permanent position. No one can lead a great team of Kennedy anymore,” said Associate Administrator Bob Cabana. Who is NASA’s Janet Petro?

Petro began his professional career as a US Army officer. She graduated from the Army Military School in West Point, NY in 1981, earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Engineering, and included women in the second class of West Point graduates. Petro also holds a Master’s degree in Business Administration from Boston University’s Metropolitan College.

In Kennedy, Petro will oversee the center’s spaceport and support both commercial customers and NASA’s scientific and human exploration missions.

Nelson has also nominated Vanessa Wish Director of the Johnson Space Center in Houston. Wish has been acting director of Johnson since May 3 after Mark Gayer resigned as director to focus more time on his health and family in the light of his cancer diagnosis. Wyche is the first African-American woman to lead the NASA Center.
