Google X loses another team leader

Another project leader leaves Google X. Emi Kolawole oversaw the top-secret moonshot project. Several Google X projects have been shut down or spun out from their parent company, Alphabet.

Google X recently lost another team leader.

According to LinkedIn, Emi Kolawole, who has been project leader for Alphabet's Moonshot division since 2021, left the company in January.

According to her LinkedIn profile, she led “early-stage confidential research to find breakthrough technology businesses for Alphabet.”

Kolawole oversaw the project's operations and kept it “on budget by leveraging the strong relationship between X and Alphabet,” she wrote on LinkedIn. She also ran a guest speaker series at X called Troublemaker Talks.

Prior to this project, Kolawole had been running internal communications for X since 2017.

Google X was launched to make technological advances and tackle big problems ranging from transportation efficiency to the climate crisis. Last year, insiders told BI that the institute was hitting the reset button and rethinking its purpose.

Some of X's most ambitious projects have been scaled back or spun out of Alphabet in favor of bets on more immediate revenue-generating potential.

Kolawole's departure comes just before a second wave of smaller layoffs at Google. Some people at Alphabet's Other Bets division are also being encouraged to seek outside funding for their projects.

Kolawole declined to comment. Google did not respond to a request for comment.
