Unreleased Google Photos feature may prevent photos from being deleted

Google is testing a new way to manage deleted photos and videos on Google Photos.

Small changes found in the recent Google Photos Android app indicate that Google is experimenting with new ways to change the way photos are deleted and restored.

According to a new report from PuinikaWeb, code in version 6.79.0.624777117 of the app references a new configurable trash feature (trash can depending on the selected language).

Currently, deleting a photo or video from Google Photos doesn't actually delete it right away. Instead, the file will be moved to the Trash and kept there for 60 days before being permanently deleted. You can retrieve images and return them to the library at any time during the 60-day period, but the 60-day period cannot be extended or shortened.

Now, it looks like Google is considering allowing users to do that by making the hard-coded 60-day value configurable. There is currently no information on the upper or lower limits for this setting, but it is understandable that some users would want a longer or shorter grace period before retrieving deleted images.

The text string in the app's code is:

“Photos_trash_ui_empty_state_caption_configurable”

and

Items in the trash will be deleted after # days

Previous versions of the app did not include the word configurable. Additionally, the # character in this case indicates a value that can be changed while the app is running. This value was previously fixed at 60.

Reasons to extend garbage retention time

Extending this period beyond 60 days makes it easier to recover accidentally deleted items, but there are good arguments for reducing this period for privacy reasons. For example, if you change this to 1 day, you can easily undo images if you accidentally delete them, but sensitive images that hackers or other malicious parties may try to access are now in the trash. There will never be a lot left.

On the other hand, the grace period may not be configurable at all by the user, making the settings available only to Google according to other private parameters. Other recent Google Photos reports reveal a possible option to automatically hide screenshots and new mobile-based storage management tools.
