Ola exits Google Maps, shifts to home-grown Ola Maps to save Rs 100 crore

Home-grown ride-hailing app Ola Cabs has ditched Google Maps and migrated to its own Ola Maps. Announcing the update, Bhavish Agarwal, co-founder and chairman of the Ola Group, said the move would save the company nearly Rs 1 billion annually.

Agarwal said last month that after leaving Azure, Ola Group has completely exited Google Maps. He asked users to check their Ola apps and update them if necessary.

“Following our exit from Azure last month, we have now completely exited Google Maps. We were spending Rs 10 crore per year on it and this month we have brought it down to zero by moving completely to in-house built Ola maps. Please keep an eye on your Ola app and update if necessary,” Agarwal said.

Agarwal said the company is currently developing enhancements for Ola Maps, such as Street View, Neuro Radiation Fields (NERF), indoor imagery, 3D maps, and drone maps. Additionally, Krutrim AI's cloud service will also provide an application programming interface (API) for Ola Maps. An API is a software interface that multiple computer programs or components use to facilitate communication.

Krutrim Cloud offers GPUs as a service on its AI computing infrastructure, enabling businesses and developers to train and fine-tune models.

The announcement comes three months after Ola Group successfully migrated all workloads to its in-house AI company, Krutrim, after ending its partnership with Microsoft Azure.

In a May X post, Agarwal announced the company's decision to end its relationship with Azure and move all operations to Krutrim within a week. With the Krutrim AI announcement, Ola Group also revealed plans to offer cloud services and mapping solutions.

Announcing Krutrim AI, Ola said that a mapping solution will also be offered within the cloud service.

On June 28, Agarwal announced on-demand pricing for Crutrim AI's cloud GPUs, ranging from Rs 105 to over Rs 1,160 per hour, depending on the type of GPU used.
