Google, Oracle, Microsoft propose moving to VMware The Register

Google Cloud offers a Broadcom-compliant version of its cloud VMware services and is pitching itself as an affordable migration target.

VMware Cloud Foundation on Google Cloud VMware Engine (GCVE) has many of the capabilities that Broadcom would like to see in their channel. First, the product is based on Cloud Foundation, a bundle of VMware hybrid cloud products recommended by Broadcom. It also recognizes Broadcom's license portability plans and promotes them as a great way to flexibly use VMware entitlements between on-premise and cloud resources.

It also reflects the fact that Broadcom offers its top “pinnacle” partners the opportunity to resell its products at discounted prices that are hard to find from other sources, allowing Google Cloud to advertise 20% lower support costs if users sign multi-year contracts and 35% lower server rental costs for those willing to sign three-year agreements.

These server costs are tuned for VMware workloads and are applicable to four new instance types that were released last Friday: the ve2-mega-96, which offers 96 hyperthreads, and the ve2-mega-128, which offers 128 hyperthreads. Both are compute nodes.

ve2-standard-so offers 25.6TB of raw data storage, double that of ve2-mega-so. Since Cloud Foundation includes VMware's VSAN virtual storage, most users will likely consider the “so” instance.

Google is also offering migration services, incentives and bonuses for users who increase their usage of the service over the course of a year, with the latter offer directly targeted at users who migrate their workloads to G-cloud.

Oracle made a similar pitch a few weeks ago, announcing a new instance type for its VMware solution that bundles Intel's 32-core Xeon Platinum 8358 processors with Nvidia Tensor Core A10 GPUs. Big Red also teased an upcoming instance type based on AMD's 192-core EPYC 9J14 processors.

Microsoft also offers a cloud VMware product, Azure VMware Solution, but Microsoft Chief Commercial Officer Judson Althoff recently called Broadcom's VMware pricing and licensing changes “the best gift” it could give customers to move to the cloud, according to CRN.

“Everybody wants to move away from VMware and into the cloud,” Althoff reportedly said at a Microsoft partner event, where he described Azure VMware Solution as an opportunity to “free our customers from the VMware pricing challenges they have and even bring their own licenses to the cloud.”

He may need to be a bit more careful with what he says going forward: A reader recently told The Register's virtualization desk that Broadcom had parted ways with HPE, leaving the Silicon Valley veteran without a reseller status.

HPE said it “values ​​its relationship with Broadcom and will continue to work together to support customers and partners as Broadcom transitions to VMware's go-to-market approach.”
