Google Gemini launches its first new voice — here's what you need to know

It appears that Google has started rolling out a new voice for Google Gemini, but the voice is currently limited to Android.

Google Gemini was initially released with just one voice that would read answers to questions, but during the Google I/O event, Google announced that it would be introducing several more natural voice options for customers to choose from.

According to a report from 9to5Google, if you enable Google Gemini today, you'll get to hear a brand new female voice: When listening to the two voice options, the new voice sounds much more natural compared to the current voice, which sounds somewhat robotic.

However, it's worth noting that the new audio only appears on Android phones, with the option missing from the iOS and web client versions, and that there's currently no way to change the audio back in settings.

The move could help Google Gemini compete with GPT-4o, which recently showed off a new AI voice, so it's no surprise to see Google rushing to unveil a new voice of its own. Apple is also introducing a more natural voice for Siri in iOS 18.

The new Gemini voice appears to still be in testing, so we don't know exactly when it will be available or how many options there will be, but considering Google Assistant offers 12 different voice options, we'd expect it to be around that number.

One reason Google is holding back on releasing new voices is likely to be to ensure they are not confused with other celebrities' voices. Recently, OpenAI was embroiled in legal trouble because one of its voice options sounded similar to Scarlett Johansson, who refused to give the AI ​​permission to use her voice. This is an especially sensitive decision, given growing concerns among actors about how easy it is becoming to clone voices.
