From the World Seed Congress to AOSCA to Seed Canada and countless conferences in between, the past few months have seen us spend more time on the road than at home. Whether we were in Rotterdam, Kansas City or Edmonton, one of the biggest topics of conversation was Latin America. There is a lot of global enthusiasm for what Latin America can offer, but also some legitimate uncertainty-driven concerns about growing pains in a still-young sector, based on misunderstandings about the current situation in Latin America and how its position in the global seed market is evolving.

What I consistently see from numerous conversations with South American companies is that Latin American seed and seed service companies are split into two camps. Some are struggling with the challenges of inventing the wheel; building new business channels (especially if those channels are international) and overcoming regulatory hurdles that are not yet clear. Others are expanding surprisingly well. As a region as a whole, Brazil is not just a country to watch, it's a country to start a business in. Many of Brazil's seed companies are experiencing great success in growth, innovation, and industry leadership. Anyone who thinks Brazil is lagging behind is not even glancing at what's really happening in the seed sector.

North American companies that aren’t taking advantage of what Latin America can offer are missing out. Latin America is a vital market that continues to grow. For those of us in North America, the off-season benefits are obvious, but Latin America has so much more to offer. According to the FAO, Latin America has the highest percentage of arable land in the world, with almost one-third of the entire region being cultivable. This makes Latin America one of the most important regions on the planet for increasing food production, both in terms of cultivated area and productivity per acre. We need Latin America to feed the world, and as we in the seed sector know, it starts with seeds. Now, I’m not suggesting that companies jump into the altruism of feeding the world. I’m just saying there’s incredible business value for those who find the right partnerships and opportunities.

Let me be clear: it won't all be easy. The Latin American market needs to mature. Finding the right path will require cooperation, partnerships and effort. There have been challenges already and there will be more in the future. It is crucial for our success that we come together as a seed sector across the Americas to help Latin America establish a truly South American presence.
