Fifty measuring instruments will be dropped on the floor of the Atlantic Ocean in an attempt to measure the “pulse” of the Earth.

They will detect vibrations caused by seismic waves and constantly record movements hundreds of kilometers deep inside the planet.

The seismographs will be positioned across an area including the Canary Islands, Madeira and the Azores – and will use technology previously used to study galaxies.

Experts say it will leave a “enormous legacy” and will help research earthquakes and volcanic tremors, as well as help track whales by the sounds they make.

University College London (UCL) is leading the project – called UPFLOW (Uprising Mantle Flow from New Seismic Observations) – which aims to understand more about the large elevations of material from the Earth’s mantle.

“This is the first seismic experiment of its kind,” said Professor Anna Ferreira of the University of California, Earth Sciences.

“It’s the first time we’ve covered such a large area of ​​the North Atlantic with these highly sensitive devices.

“By analyzing their data, we hope to better understand the massive movements that occur hundreds of kilometers deep in the Earth’s mantle – in particular, the upward flows of material that we still don’t understand very well.

“It is these movements that ultimately cause volcanic eruptions and can also lead to earthquakes.”

The method of seismic images that will be used previously by astrophysicists was used to study distant galaxies.

“The existence of the Canary Islands and the volcanic islands of Madeira and the Azores is the result of massive underground movements,” said Professor Jorge Miguel Alberto de Miranda, from the Portugal Institute of the Sea and Atmosphere.

“Our research will aim to reveal if there is a link in how these islands form.”

The seismographs will be dropped by boat over the next five weeks, to anchor themselves to the sea floor, before being collected a year later.
