Parts of SA shook by three successive weak earthquakes

Parts of South Africa were hit by three weak earthquakes in the span of three hours on Saturday, July 17th. The South African Geosciences Council and Volcano Discovery detected seismic activity in Mpumalanga and the North Cape.

South Africa has been shaken by 44 earthquakes over the past 30 days, according to the Vulcano Discovery, the largest of which was a 4.2-magnitude earthquake 38 kilometers southeast of Springbok, north of the Cape on July 6.

The first earthquake with a magnitude of 41 km hit the eastern municipality of Girt Sipande district in Mpumalanga at 15:17 on Saturday. Its strength was 2.6 degrees.

An earthquake measuring 2.7 on the Richter scale struck 5.9 kilometers southwest of Kato in the Northern Cape at 15:43. The Kathu earthquake was the largest that day.

The third earthquake was recorded so far at 17:21. It had a magnitude of 2.3 and struck 24 km southeast of Bronkhorstspruit in the municipality of Nkangala District, Mpumalanga.

Of the 44 earthquakes experienced by the country during the past month, only two had a magnitude of 4.0 or higher, while there were 7 between 3.0 and 4.0 and 35 were between 2.0 and 3.0. Earlier this week, on Wednesday, July 14, three more weak earthquakes were recorded in the Free State and Gauteng.
