Did you feel it? USGS announces 2.6-magnitude earthquake near Block Island

Five light tremors were all reported below 1.9 on the Richter scale this year, and five were reported in 2020. There were 16 earthquakes in 2019, none greater than 3.0.

The strongest earthquake ever recorded near Rhode Island was 4.7 and had its epicenter four miles east of Narragansett Pier on September 3, 1978.

On June 25, 1970, a magnitude 5 earthquake occurred 115 miles south of Rhode Island in the Atlantic Ocean.

So far, 14 earthquakes have been reported across the United States, including eight in Idaho, four in California, and one in Texas.

Earthquakes in Southern New England

The USGS says New England has felt small earthquakes and “has experienced infrequent large earthquakes since colonial times”.

“The Boston area was damaged three times in a span of 28 years in the mid-1700s, and New York City was damaged in 1737 and 1884,” the USGS website reports. “The largest known earthquakes in New England occurred in 1638 (magnitude 6.5) in Vermont or New Hampshire, and in 1755 (magnitude 5.8) offshore from Cape Ann northeast of Boston. The Cape Anne earthquake caused extensive damage to the Boston waterfront. The most recent earthquake in New England causing moderate damage occurred in 1940 (magnitude 5.6) in central New Hampshire.”

The USGS says earthquakes occur on a fault within the rock, usually at a depth of miles, although some New England earthquakes occur at shallow depths.

“Most of the bedrock of New England and Long Island was assembled when the continents collided to form a supercontinent 500-300 million years ago, causing the northern Appalachian Mountains to rise,” the USGS website reports. The rest of the rocks were formed when the supercontinent separated 200 million years ago to form what is now the northeastern United States, the Atlantic Ocean, and Europe.
