New earthquake speeds up evacuations in the volcano-hit Canary Islands

The evacuation of thousands of residents from La Palma was accelerated after another earthquake hit the island.

A new fissure opened, spewing more lava, shortly before a 3.8-magnitude earthquake hit Monday at 9.32 p.m.

Volcanic Discovery reports that a new fissure has opened in Tacande, in the municipality of El Paso.

The seismic activity occurred a day after Cumbre Vieja erupted, forcing 5,500 to evacuate away from giant rivers of lava that had already destroyed more than 100 homes on the hillsides.

This was the first volcanic eruption in 50 years in the Spanish Canary Islands. Since then, giant rivers of lava have slowly but relentlessly rolled towards the sea.
