Earthquake rattles South Los Angeles County

BOYLE HEIGHTS, CA – An earthquake measuring 3.6 on the Richter scale struck 1 mile from Boyle Heights in southern Los Angeles County. The US Geological Survey said the quake shook the Maywood communities and commerce.

The earthquake was reported at 7:01 a.m. and struck about five miles from downtown Los Angeles. The earthquake was felt in Maywood and as far away as the Santa Monica, Long Beach, San Fernando, and San Gabriel valleys.

“What you feel in a small earthquake like this morning depends on how close you are to it,” said California seismologist Dr. Lucy Jones. “Because it’s 10 miles away, everyone is at least 10 miles away from it. The closer you get, the sharper the action.”

Initially, the earthquake was reported to have a magnitude of 3.9, but it was later reduced to 3.6.

NBC Los Angeles reports that some Angelenos reported a shaking sound before feeling the quake on Sunday morning.

No injuries were reported from today’s earthquake as of 10 a.m., and no major damage was reported by the Los Angeles Fire Department and other law enforcement agencies.
