Qatar and WHO convene the first Strategic Dialogue
On November 15, 2021, the State of Qatar and the WHO convened their first strategic dialogue, building on their strong partnership and commitment to working together to address global health challenges. The overall goal of the meeting was to create a platform to facilitate regular dialogue with WHO leadership and technical experts on WHO programs and policies. The event also provided an opportunity to review key areas supported by Qatar and explore new areas of cooperation, including the impact of COVID-19, emergency response and preparedness, science and innovation, neglected tropical diseases, health and migration.
“The Government of Qatar is an important partner and supporter of the WHO mandate and program,” said Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, WHO Director-General. “I thank the State of Qatar for its commitment to global health and its commitment to flexible WHO funding, which is so crucial to our mission of promoting health, preserving the world and serving the vulnerable.”
Her Excellency Dr. Hanan Mohamed Al-Kuwari, Minister of Public Health, said: “Under the leadership of His Highness Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, Emir of the State of Qatar, Qatar is proud to provide flexible resources to support the work of the WHO on COVID 19, and contribute to humanitarian responses in emergencies, as well as a new partnership in sport and health. ”
“We want to strengthen the existing partnership between the WHO and the State of Qatar to improve efficiency and establish basic health services as part of our efforts to achieve SDG3,” said Mr. Khalifa Al Kuwari, Director General of the Qatar Development Fund.
The strategic dialogue is accompanied by a series of enhanced cooperation and development within the partnership between Qatar and the WHO. This includes the signing of a multi-year Memorandum of Understanding focused on promoting health and safety, launched ahead of the 2022 FIFA World Cup to be held in Qatar. Memorandum of Understanding for the period 2020-2023 in support of the Organization Thirteenth General Work Program 2019-2023, was also signed in March 2021.
