Fourth earthquake to shake Scotland in seven days

Scotland has been hit by another earthquake, bringing the country’s total population this week to four.

Locals in the Scottish Highlands reported “big bang” sounds and felt the rumble in their homes as well, as the earthquake struck Roy Bridge.

The British Geological Survey (BGS) said the earthquake was reported with a magnitude of 2.2, and struck at a depth of 7.5 kilometres, the Daily Record reported.

One Facebook user stated: “Another earthquake in Roybridge???”

Others stated that they also felt and heard the earthquake in Bohini and Rogburn as well.

Another replied, “I just heard a big bang in Spin, I thought it was in someone’s boxes or something.”

The British Geological Survey said: “There have been quite a few reports from members of the public in the Roybridge area that they have felt this event.”

This is the third earthquake reported to hit the small village in the past few days, the latest being a 0.9-magnitude earthquake at 4.09 on the morning of Tuesday, November 16.

BGS noted that it came after a 1.6-magnitude quake about an hour and a half ago, both of which were at a depth of 7 km.

The first earthquake in Roybridge came about an hour after people in western Scotland were hit by a 3.3 earthquake.

The epicenter was about 11 miles (18 km) northwest of Lochgilphead in Argyll and Bute, and 88 miles (142 km) northwest of Glasgow.

More than 30 people told the USGS they felt the quake, with reports coming from as far away as Edinburgh and Ballycastle in Northern Ireland.

Glenn Ford, BGS seismic analyst, said: “From a UK perspective, because we are a very low seismic zone, we probably only see about 15 earthquakes of this size or larger per year, so it’s quite unusual in this respect.

“We get about two to three hundred earthquakes every year somewhere in the UK region, so the fact that this earthquake was actually felt is unusual because about 90% of them are so small that no one really realizes it.”

Data from the British Geological Survey shows that between 200 and 300 earthquakes are detected in the UK each year, with tremors of between 3.0 and 3.9 on the mainland occurring on average once every three years.
