A 7.3-magnitude earthquake hits Banda Beach in eastern Indonesia

A 7.3-magnitude earthquake hit the Banda Sea in the eastern part of Indonesia on Thursday with minor damage reported, according to the country’s Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG).

BMKG said two houses collapsed and some other minor damage was reported in southwest Maluku, but the quake did not cause a tsunami.

The quake occurred at 1:25 a.m. local time and had its epicenter in the sea 132 kilometers east of Tiakor city in South West Maluku District, Maluku Province and at a depth of 183 kilometers under the sea floor, BMKG’s chief of the earthquake and tsunami center Bambang Sitio Prayetno said in a written statement on Thursday. .

The agency recorded three aftershocks with a magnitude of 5.2 greater.
