A major earthquake could destroy Israel, warns the army

NEW DELHI – The military leadership of the Jewish state has warned that a massive earthquake killing thousands of civilians is expected to hit Israel sometime in the future.

The Civil Defense Agency said, according to the newspaper, “Haaretz”, that “a strong earthquake is expected to occur in the State of Israel, which will result in a mass catastrophe, accompanied by thousands of dead and wounded, and widespread destruction of buildings and infrastructure.”

“The fact that a strong earthquake has not occurred for a long time increases the chance of a strong earthquake in Israel soon,” the agency was quoted as saying, but cautioned that while experts believe that “a strong earthquake will occur in Israel but it cannot be predicted” with certainty.

The Facebook post came in response to concerned comments after a series of small earthquakes felt in northern Israel over the past months.

On Wednesday morning, less than a day after the army’s statement online, another small earthquake of magnitude 3.1 struck northern Israel, 14 kilometers northeast of Beit She’an, the fourth and fifth earthquakes to hit Israel on Tuesday and Wednesday.
