M’s buildings designed after 2017 are earthquake-ready, says Don

Kuala Lumpur: Most of the new government buildings designed after 2017 are ready to withstand earthquakes, says Professor Azlan Adnan, head of the Engineering Seismology and Earthquake Engineering Research Group.

Older buildings built before that may be at risk of severe earthquake damage, said Azlan, who is also a lecturer in the Department of Structures and Materials in UTM’s School of Civil Engineering.

“When the magnitude 6 earthquake occurred in Ranau, Sabah (in 2015), most of the buildings were badly cracked, there were also buildings that were not designed properly, there were beams and broken buildings that could no longer be used.

“The government wanted to produce a building design standard for earthquake resistance, and the research team I lead has successfully produced the design,” he said when contacted by Program recently.

Among the things to consider in building design standards, Azlan said, are building girders that must be able to withstand the load horizontally due to earthquakes; It has solid and rigid beam foundations and has looser connections between columns and beams.

According to Azlan, the height of the building will also affect the building’s natural frequency and “resonance effect” when an earthquake occurs.

Azlan said his team expects a magnitude 5 earthquake to occur in Peninsular Malaysia, and for that reason, they needed to establish standard operating procedures for designs of buildings that could withstand the effects of a natural disaster.

“Areas near Klang Valley, Bukit Tinggi (Pahang), Kuala Bela (Negiri Sembilan) and Manjung (Perak) have active faults where we are still unable to see the actual movement. We expect a magnitude five earthquake to occur on the peninsula.

Apart from that, he said his team was also in the process of producing a design standard for bridges to withstand earthquake tremors, with the research funded by the Malaysian Standards Department.

“In Malaysia, no one produced a standard for bridges, if there was a design, they might have used other countries’ standards, we didn’t apply (a standard),” he said.

On February 25, when a tremor from an earthquake was felt in Bukit Tinggi, Sumatra, Indonesia, the Fire and Rescue Department received a total of 34 emergency calls to buildings from across the Klang Valley.

The UTM Earthquake and Earthquake Engineering Research Group studies the possibility of earthquakes in the country as well as the level of tremors that can occur, as well as the movement of faults and earthquakes from underground to the surface of the earth.
