Seismologist says two fault systems have left recent swarms of earthquakes in Ventura County

It was an amazing few moments for Jared Krause and his girlfriend.

“My friend and I were sitting in the living room, and the house started shaking,” Krause said. “We looked at each other, we both stood to get out of the house, it took 10 or 15 seconds, and the shaking stopped.”

The pair were shaken by a 2.8-magnitude earthquake last Monday night, which was felt in many parts of Ventura County, as well as areas in Santa Barbara and Los Angeles counties.

Dozens of small earthquakes have hit the Ojai and Santa Paula regions over the past few weeks, the largest being 4.0 on the Richter scale. Fortunately, there were no reports of injuries or damage.

Seismologists now say there have been two different earthquake flocks, focused on two different faults in the Ojai Valley region:

Dr. Ralph Archuleta is a senior seismologist at the University of California, Santa Barbara.

“You always get a little nervous when you see a bunch of earthquakes happening over a short period of time, because it shows that part of the fault is active,” Archuleta said.

The researcher says that while many people associate California earthquakes with the San Andreas fault, the truth is that Ventura and Santa Barbara counties have a number of other less well-known, but potentially dangerous, counties.

Archuleta says the county has been the center of two distinct swarms of earthquakes in the past few weeks, which have included two different fault zones.

The seismologist says the first swarm of earthquakes, in February, was centered northwest of Santa Paula. This first swarm included a 4.0-magnitude earthquake, and was felt by people from Santa Barbara to Orange County. But the good news is again that no injuries or damages have been reported.

Archuleta says the newer second squadron was based in a lesser known fault zone. He says that while the swarms have abated, the earthquakes are a reminder that we live in an earthquake country, and we should be prepared.
