Bay Cities FC wins fans’ hearts despite losing to Quakes

Bay Cities FC didn’t need to win the match to win the moment in the third round of the Lamar Hunt US Open Cup last week.

The new third-tier football club based in Redwood City has already done a lot to make its presence felt with a stunning 2-1 win over second-tier side Monterrey Bay FC in the second round of the Cup. Getting the right to return to PayPal Park on Tuesday, April 19, this time to face Class A in a match broadcast on ESPN+, was a victory in itself. Thus, despite the 5-0 loss to the Quakes, the Bay Cities players were once again able to show a fight and desire that impressed over 8,000 game participants and thousands more who watched from home.

“Having a new team in the Gulf is great,” said local fan and spectator Joshua van Dozen.

Dosen said that he and his girlfriend are new to the world of football and that they are “excited to be part of the new team’s fan base.”

“It was her first professional football match and we can’t wait for more,” Dozen said. “Everyone we spoke to from the team is very nice and welcoming.”

Bay Cities kept things interesting for their fans against earthquakes, particularly in the tense first 25 minutes as the teams played a game of cat and mouse. Earthquakes continued to score two goals in the first half on their way to victory. Even with the fifth goal in the 88th minute, Bay Cities fans did not give up their support for their home team. The Bay Cities players were greeted after the game with applause, requests for photos and autographs.

“I told them after the game that I’m proud of them,” said the club’s co-founder and coach Anders Perez. “This was only our fifth game together and we were playing with the MLS team. We are showing with our way of playing that we have talent. Now we need to get it together so we can win the league.”

The Bay Cities Albion will host San Diego at Sequoia High School on Saturday, April 30. Game tickets can be purchased here.
