Medium intensity earthquake hits J&K

Kashmir is located in an earthquake sensitive area and earthquakes have caused devastation here in the past and there were no immediate reports of any loss or property damage in today’s earthquake.

An earthquake of moderate intensity measuring 5 on the Richter scale hit Jammu and Kashmir on Thursday. Although there has been no report of any injuries or property damage from anywhere so far.

An earthquake measuring 5 on the Richter scale occurred in J&K at 5:35 a.m. Thursday, officials from the Disaster Management Authority said.

The epicenter of the earthquake was in the Gorno-Badakhshan region in Tajikistan, its coordinates are 37.49 degrees north latitude and 71.85 degrees east longitude.

“It has happened 108 kilometers into the Earth’s crust,” an official with the disaster management authority said.

There were no immediate reports of loss of life or damage to property so far, although the earthquake was felt in Srinagar city and some other parts of the valley.

Kashmir is located in an earthquake sensitive area and earthquakes have wreaked havoc here in the past.

More than 80,000 people on both sides of the Line of Control (LoC) were killed by the earthquake on October 8, 2005. The earthquake measured 7.6 on the Richter scale.
