Sydney news: Three teenagers are still in hospital after being stabbed

Here’s what you need to know this morning.

New South Wales Police are appealing for information after three men were stabbed in a “targeted attack” following a party in the inner city of Sydney early Sunday morning.

Shortly after 3 a.m., police attended an incident outside the Norfolk Hotel on Cleveland Street in Redfern where the 22nd birthday party was being held.

There were no irregularities and the party-goers were moved. However, around 3:45 am, the police were called again to a nearby location where they found three young men with stabbing wounds.

Police believe the two men are from western Sydney and that the incident was not linked to a gang.

An 18-year-old man sustained a stomach injury and was taken to the Royal Prince Alfred Hospital in critical condition.

The 19-year-old was also in critical condition with multiple chest injuries. He was taken to St Vincent’s Hospital.

The third, 20-year-old man, was stabbed in the arm and was taken to Prince Alfred Hospital in a stable condition.

“It is worrying that people will come to the party armed with a knife,” said South Sydney Police Chief Rod Hart.

“We think they were all known to each other.

“I want the Redfern community to be reassured that this is not a random incident. We believe this is a targeted attack.”

A 17-year-old boy was charged with the murder of a boy of the same age yesterday after an altercation at a fast food restaurant on the North Coast.

Emergency services were called to the restaurant on Center Street in a casino around 5 p.m. Sunday, amid reports of a brawl.

The boy died at the scene of his injuries. Another 17-year-old boy was arrested soon after and taken to a casino police station where he was charged with murder, reckless wounding, and brawl.

He is due to appear before the Children’s Court today.

An 18-year-old man has been taken to Lismore Hospital where he remains in a stable condition.

Confiscation of firearms To gain a new life, police seized guns last week during raids to crack down on organized crime. (Supplied: NSW Police)

More than 2,800 firearms in the possession of the NSW Police are melted down and turned into other materials, as the police crack down on organized crime.

The firearms, weighing approximately 2,228 kg, were seized through criminal investigations, abandoned and turned over by members of the community.

Deputy Prime Minister and Police Minister Paul Toole said it was a move to protect the community.

“We know that the vast majority of people in our community own firearms for good reason,” he said.

Then there are those who use these weapons to spread terror and inflict serious harm on others.

Police Commissioner Karen Webb said the destruction of the firearms prevented them from falling into the wrong hands.

“We have all seen the harm that illegal use of firearms can cause and the fear it can cause within the broader community,” Commissioner Webb said.

“By destroying these weapons, we prevent any weapons kept for legitimate purposes from falling into the wrong hands and being used for other crimes.”

Hearings on flood response kick off in Ballina. The inquiry will make recommendations on a wide range of flood-related issues (Facebook: Ballina Shire Council)

Today, the first hearings of the Parliamentary Inquiry into the response to the floods of the northern rivers are taking place in Ballina.

The investigation includes a group of politicians from different parties and is separate from the independent investigation that visited earlier this month.

Committee Chairman Walt Secord said the sessions included a public forum in which anyone from the region could speak.

“The most important thing from our point of view is what the government and the opposition can do in the future,” he said.

“And we know there will be great floods again. So what’s the best way to prepare and respond?”

Secord expects the investigation to provide findings and recommendations across a wide range of flood-related issues.

“There’s coordination, there’s insurance, there’s rebuilding, there’s a whole bunch of different things, so we’re going to take a broad approach and we’re going to be working down our report probably by the end of next month,” he said.

Ballina RSL’s hearing will begin at 1:45 p.m., and the public forum will begin at 4:30 p.m.

Hearings will also take place in Lismore on Tuesday and Murwillumba on Wednesday.

The proceedings will be broadcast live on the NSW Parliament website.

Volunteers learn from an earthquake simulation scenario Emergency service crews use their training during the flooding of the north coast of New South Wales (McKenzie Bros.)

Emergency service volunteers have completed natural disaster training that simulates the immediate effects of an earthquake.

The program tested specialized skills including casualty handling, height rescue, electrical safety, urban search and rescue, first aid, and mental health and wellbeing.

State Emergency Service Commissioner Carlene York said regular training is important in a life-saving role.

“We have recently seen firsthand the valuable and diverse roles that our volunteers play in saving lives and creating safer communities,” Commissioner York said.

Among the challenges was a scenario in which volunteers worked together to rescue 14 victims trapped in the parking lot after the earthquake.

The exercise was attended by SES units from Canada Bay, Gosford, Parramatta, Port Macquarie, Port Stephens, Queanbeyan and South Illawarra, as well as officers from Fire and Rescue NSW and St John Ambulance.
