UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency, sends earthquake relief aid to 12,000 people in southeast Afghanistan – Afghanistan
KABUL – Three convoys of relief supplies from the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) have so far been dispatched to help people in southeastern Afghanistan’s Paktika and Khost provinces who lost their homes and possessions amid the devastation wrought by last Wednesday’s earthquake.
So far, UNHCR has provided enough relief supplies for more than 12,000 people.
On Tuesday, UNHCR dispatched a convoy carrying 100 family tents and 100 essential relief kits along with 1,500 “dignity kits” to help women and girls facing special needs since the loss of their belongings such as clothes and household necessities in the earthquake.
In the affected area, UNHCR relief aid distributions began on 25 June in Jayan and Sibera, with further distributions in Dangar Lagad.
UNHCR’s first convoy actually set off on Friday 24 June, with the first two convoys transporting 1,500 family tents and 1,500 core relief kits to the quake zone. Kits include blankets, cooking utensils, sunlamps, plastic tarpaulins, buckets, and soap and water containers. Specialized teams of UNHCR staff also arrived on the ground to assess needs and organize distributions in affected villages on 24 June.
UNHCR is focusing the delivery of relief items in Spira district in Khost district and in Jayan and Barmal districts in Paktika district.
“People residing in Khost and Paktika provinces need urgent weather protection, while women and girls need specific items,” said Leonard Zulu, UNHCR representative. “UNHCR is determined to meet the protection and assistance needs of people affected by the earthquake, along with its humanitarian partner agencies.”
The affected areas in Khost and Paktika provinces are remote, and poor road conditions impede their accessibility. Aid workers currently drive eight hours a day to reach outlying villages to assess needs and provide assistance. Locals sleep mostly outdoors due to the constant tremors, while people with cars sleep in their cars for safety.
“I am talking to people who have lost all their documents, and everything is buried under the rubble,” said Ahmed Jawad Wafa, a UNHCR field officer.
UNHCR and its partners are engaged through district-based programming in 70 priority areas for return and reintegration in Afghanistan, which includes earthquake-affected districts (Sabra district in Khost, Barmal and Jayan districts in Paktika). The Solutions Strategy for Afghan Refugees (SSAR) support platform provides coordinated support in Afghanistan, Iran and Pakistan for refugees, returnees, IDPs and host communities.
“Families have lost loved ones, been injured, and been so traumatized, while many people have lost their documents and children have become orphans,” said Leonard Zulu, of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees. “We plan to support the affected people by providing their shelter and protection needs.”
Overall, the United Nations aims to assist around 362,000 people in the earthquake-stricken area. The United Nations estimates that about 770 people have been killed and more than 1,500 wounded, with numbers expected to rise. It is estimated that about 4,500 homes were completely or partially damaged.
Afghanistan suffers from one of the most serious humanitarian crises in the world, with an estimated 24 million people across the country in need of humanitarian assistance, and children are particularly affected by malnutrition amid the impact of decades of conflict, the withdrawal of development assistance and the impact of sanctions. The United Nations is seeking a total of $4.4 billion for humanitarian programs in 2022, of which UNHCR needs $374 million.
