Afghanistan: Humanitarian airlift delivers medical aid in response to earthquake – Afghanistan

Today, a new European Union Humanitarian Airlift flight has arrived in Kabul. It delivered 36 tons of life-saving goods to address the humanitarian crisis in Afghanistan and support the victims of the June 22 earthquake.

The shipment consists of medical equipment such as medicines, relief items, equipment for safe drinking water and sanitation supplies.

It enables EU humanitarian partners UNICEF, WHO and Médecins Sans Frontières to continue providing vital aid and health care services to Afghans in need.

Janez Lenarcic, Commissioner for Crisis Management, said: “The European Union is today celebrating its twentieth flight on the humanitarian airlift to Kabul to ensure the continued flow of vital medicines and medical materials to Afghanistan. The country was affected by simultaneous crises, from widespread hunger that affected half the population to the powerful earthquake that shook the country just a few days ago. The European Union is therefore stepping up assistance at this critical time.”

The June earthquake hit an already very fragile country, marked by decades of conflict, frequent droughts, and severe economic decline due to recent political developments. The earthquake alone had a devastating effect with over 1,000 dead and nearly 3,700 injured.

The European Union has allocated one million euros in emergency funding for humanitarian organizations providing immediate humanitarian relief operations to those affected, and in 2022 allocated a total of 115 million euros in humanitarian aid provided by the European Union to the country.
