Prime Minister Modi inaugurates Veer Palak Memorial today in Kutch, Gujarat

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate on Sunday the Veer Palak Memorial in Angar town of Kutch district, Gujarat state. It will be a memorial to the children who died during the 2001 earthquake.

On January 26, 2001, 185 students and 20 teachers were buried under the rubble of nearby buildings when a 6.9-magnitude earthquake hit Gujarat, destroying everything.

Everyone around the world mourned this tragedy. Mr. Narendra Modi, who was then Chief Minister of Gujarat, announced the construction of a memorial to commemorate these children. Now, this monument is ready outside the city of Anjar and it will be inaugurated by the Prime Minister.

The memorial is said to be inspired by a monument built in Sichuan Province, China, after the earthquake in 2008 that killed 1,000 students and teachers at Beichuan Middle School.

Under the guidance of Prime Minister Bhupendra Patel, the construction of this monument was completed. 100 family members of the deceased were invited to the inauguration ceremony.

It will also contain a Children’s Museum dedicated to deceased children under construction in five sections.

The first section presents photographs of the deceased and past memories. Then, in the section of destruction, memorials to the dead children and their replicas showing the wreckage were presented. After that, a special room was set up for the earthquake experiment. Here the earthquake will be felt by simulator and also on video screen.

Apart from that, the process of the earthquake, scientific reasons and other necessary details have been included in the section. In the concluding exhibition, visitors are asked questions about their earthquake experiences.

To honor the children’s names have been placed in a memorial erected outside the Prakashpong Museum. Here are the names of innocent children and teachers who have fallen victims written on the wall with their pictures. The powerful ‘Prakashpong’ was built here to honor them, and the light emitting from it will be visible throughout the city of Anjar.

The Veer Palak memorial will be part of several projects that Modi will inaugurate in Kutch including Smriti Van in Bhuj – a memorial to 12,932 people killed in the epicenter of the Kutch district.
