The US Geological Survey announces that an earthquake struck northern New York north of Albany this morning. At 3:45 a.m., the USGS reported the 12th earthquake to hit the northeast in the past 30 days; This weak seismic event, classified as a 1.9 event on the Richter scale, was detected in southern Glens Falls north and east of Saratoga Springs. The epicenter was at a depth of 10.2 km. While the earthquake was measured by seismographs in the northeast, it was likely not strong enough for most people to feel.

Just yesterday, an earthquake shook central Maine. In contrast to the earthquake in New York today, people believed that an explosion occurred in the seismic event in Maine, with dozens of people reporting loud noises and shaking. The Maine earthquake is classified as a magnitude 2.3 event.

The northeastern region has been hit by a total of 12 earthquakes in the past 30 days. Maine had 5, NJ 2, and one hit off the coast of New Jersey, and the rest hit Canada near the US border. The earthquakes ranged in intensity from 1.2 to 2.6, with the strongest group of these earthquakes hitting Maine on September 1. While people felt shaking or heard noises from these seismic events, there were no reports of injuries.

According to the Northeastern States Emergency Consortium (NESEC), New York is a state with a very long history of seismic activity that has hit all parts of the state. Since the first earthquake recorded on December 19, 1737, New York has had more than 550 earthquakes centered within its state boundaries through 2016. It has also experienced strong ground shaking from earthquakes centered in the neighboring US states and Canadian provinces. Most earthquakes in New York have occurred in the greater New York City area, in the Adirondacks region, and in the western part of the state.

While many of the earthquakes that hit New York are as weak as today, some have been devastating. Of the 551 earthquakes recorded between 1737 and 2016, 5 were considered “harmful”: 1737, 1929, 1944, 1983 and 2002.

While most of the earthquakes that hit New York were in the northern part of the state, New York City has also experienced devastating earthquakes over the years. At about 10:30 p.m. on December 18, 1737, an unknown earthquake with a magnitude of 5.2 struck New York City. This earthquake damaged some chimneys in the city. On August 10, 1884, another earthquake of magnitude 5.2 struck. This earthquake caused chimneys and plaster to crack, windows to shatter, and objects to be thrown from shelves not only in New York City, but all over the surrounding cities of New York and New Jersey as well. The shaking from the 1884 earthquake was felt as far west as Toledo, Ohio and as far east as Penobscot Bay, Maine. Some have also reported feeling it in Baltimore, Maryland.

The earthquakes in the northeast are not related to the swarm of earthquakes that occur south and west of this region in a region known as the New Madrid Seismic Zone (NMSZ). Dozens of earthquakes have struck there in recent weeks, with the USGS reporting that overall seismic activity is about 300% higher than normal this summer in the NMSZ.
