Mexico earthquake triggers ‘desert tsunami’ in Death Valley Cave 1,500 miles away in Nevada

An earthquake in Mexico earlier this week sent four-foot waves crashing around a cave system in Death Valley, Nevada.

A 7.6 magnitude earthquake shook the states of Colima and Michoacan in western Mexico on Monday (September 19). The Devil’s Hole cave system is located in Death Valley National Park, which is in eastern California and extends into parts of Nevada, about 1,500 miles to the north.

The highest temperature ever recorded on Earth was recorded in Death Valley on July 10, 1913, when a temperature of 56.7 °C (134 °F) was reached, according to Guinness World Records.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration reports that the area gets at least 2.2 inches of rain each year on average.

Within that particularly dry region, Devil’s Hole is a “geothermal cave system” that retains water, according to the National Park Service (NPS).

The cave system is “the only natural habitat for the endangered devilfish,” NPS states on its site. There are only between 100 and 180 in the wild.

The cave system is more than 430 feet (131 m) deep, with a small fish at the top 80 feet (24.3 m).

The water in caves is usually calm, rich in carbonate and low in oxygen. The average temperature is 93 degrees Fahrenheit (34 degrees Celsius).

Earlier this week, 22 minutes after the earthquake in Mexico, four-foot waves pounded around the cave system.

Death Valley National Park wrote in a Facebook post on Wednesday: “On September 19, 2022, a major earthquake that shook the Pacific coast of Mexico sent waves into the Devil’s Hole — literally.” “The 7.6-magnitude event occurred near the Colima-Michoacan border at 11:05 a.m. local time (PDT; 1:05 p.m. at the epicenter). NPS personnel were on-site conducting research and saw the effects firsthand. Within five minutes, The still water in the pond started to slowly move, and soon it formed several feet high.”

“The endangered devilfish (Cyprinodon diapolis) has evolved with this species of periodic natural disturbance, and they are fine and swimming (fortunately?) afterwards,” park staff added in the post. “According to previous observations, employees expect to see an increase in spawning activity over the next few days, and hopefully that will lead to more recruits in the population.”

Newsweek reported an increase in population after other earthquakes that triggered waves in Devils Hole. The 2012 earthquake in Guerrero and Oaxaca states, the Gulf of Alaska earthquake in 2018, and the Ridgecrest earthquakes in 2019 prompted water to remove algae from rocks, affecting the food supply.

“It’s crazy that earthquakes so far away can affect the Devil’s Hole,” Kevin Wilson, an aquatic ecologist with Death Valley National Park, said in a January 2018 statement following the Alaska earthquake. “We’ve seen this many times before, but it still amazes me.”

According to NPS, “This phenomenon is technically known as seismic earthquakes. They are standing waves in a closed body of water (such as a lake or pond) that are caused by the seismic waves of an earthquake.”
