Weak earthquake rocks western Tennessee, near the center of the New Madrid seismic zone

According to the US Geological Survey, a weak earthquake shook parts of western Tennessee today in an area not far from the heart of the New Madrid Seismic Zone, which is centered under New Madrid County, Missouri. The earthquake occurred at 9:04 am this morning and was classified as a weak event with a magnitude of 1.6. The epicenter was 3 km deep and struck less than two miles southwest of Ridley, Tennessee. As is usually the case with seismic events rated under 2.0 degrees, the USGS reported that no one used the “Have you felt it?” tool on their website to report the event. Today’s earthquake came on the heels of a similar earthquake on Sept. 25 , ending a 5-day hiatus in which no earthquakes were recorded in the state.

Classification of the September 25 earthquake as a 1.9-magnitude event; The area below Madisonville, Tennessee within Joyce Kilmer-Slickrock Wilderness shook. The earthquake struck at 7:52 am on the 25th of the month. The epicenter of the earthquake was at a depth of approximately 10.4 km.

While the earthquake was weak, it adds to the number of earthquakes that have hit Tennessee in recent weeks. Dozens of earthquakes have hit Tennessee since mid-August.

Most of the earthquakes over the past 30 days have been in the western part of the state, where there has been significant seismic activity in recent weeks. Western Tennessee lies within the New Madrid Seismic Zone, an area notable for a catastrophic series of earthquakes in 1811-1812 that were centered near New Madrid County, Missouri. The New Madrid Seismic Zone is also known as the NMSZ for short.

According to the Missouri Department of Public Safety, the New Madrid seismic zone is active and averages about 200 measured events per year (magnitude 1.0 or greater). Tremors large enough to be felt (magnitude 2.5 – 3.0) occur annually. On average every 18 months, a rift releases a shock of magnitude 4.0 or greater, which can cause minor local damage. An amount of 5.0 or greater occurs about once every decade, can cause significant damage and can be felt in many cases.

According to the USGS, the magnitude of earthquakes in the NMSZ is about 300% more than normal this summer. While the magnitude was high, the intensity was low and the earthquake caused no damage or injuries.

While eastern Tennessee is not part of the NMSZ, they also experience earthquakes from time to time. The USGS says that western Tennessee has a higher frequency of devastating earthquake tremors, and the risk is not low in eastern Tennessee. In the eastern part of the state, the USGS says this area will likely experience 50-100 devastating earthquakes over 10,000 years. While this number is low, it is much higher than elsewhere in the eastern half of the United States, where there were likely to be 10 or fewer earthquakes during the same period.
