Strongest earthquake in years hits Oregon – ahead of state’s annual earthquake drills

Strongest earthquake in years hits Oregon – ahead of state’s annual earthquake drills

The most significant earthquake to hit Oregon in recent years shook people awake and frightened animals early Friday, but caused no visible damage, authorities said.

The 4.4-degree earth action came at 5:52 a.m. Friday, October 7, about 10 miles southeast of the rural community of Lacombe.

Maps from the US Geological Survey show that the earthquake can be felt from Portland to the hut and from the foothills of the Cascade to the coast – an area of about 1.8 million people.

“This was a wake-up call — literally — that we live in an earthquake country here in Oregon,” said Andrew Phelps, director of the Oregon Emergency Management Department. “Earthquakes and other disasters don’t wait for us to be prepared. It is up to us to do our part to be prepared when the earth shakes. That wasn’t too bad but it might be next.”

The earthquake was felt to varying degrees throughout Salem – and some didn’t feel it at all.

Rose Leonardi wrote: “We live across High Street from Boone’s locker and were surprised to hear that there was an earthquake.” “A friend in Silverton said her cat started screaming at the time of the earthquake but didn’t feel anything.”

Sue Fleischman of Northeast Salem said the quake “wasn me out of a deep sleep like something hard hit and shook the foot of the bed.”

Susan White lives along the Willamette River in downtown Salem and said, “I woke up just before six in the morning to what sounded like someone shaking my bed so hard. I had never had an earthquake before, so I thought of nothing but surprise, a bit of fear, and annoyance in That time, so I went back to sleep, sort of, until 7 as usual.”

In South Salem, Deborah Chaney said, “Our dog started squealing about ten minutes before it hit, and then started shivering after it happened.” “At first our house squeaked, then shook for a few seconds. It didn’t last long, but it was definitely an earthquake!”

Melanie Zermer said, “I was lying with my cat on my chest. Then I heard and felt something I thought was my cat jumping off the shelf to my nightstand. But my cat was on my chest! We were both surprised and Luna jumped off me and onto the shelf to look out the window.”

Writing in The Independent, Brent Dehart said the quake “rattled the windows. The dogs woke my wife first so she was awake when it started.”

Lou Nelson said he lives in West Salem and did not feel the earthquake. He was asleep “when my daughter from Austin, Texas, texted me to see if I felt it.”

In Eugene, emergency management officials from across the state gathered for the Oregon Emergency Management Association’s annual conference. The earthquake struck two hours before the last sessions of the conference.

The earthquake was just below the threshold for triggering cell phone alerts for those who signed up for the government’s ShakeAlert. These notifications pop up when a 4.5-magnitude earthquake is recorded, and general 5.0-magnitude alerts go off, according to state officials. People can sign up for ShakeAlert online here.

Salem City officials said the quake did not trigger 911 calls, and the Oregon Emergency Department said late Friday that there were no reports of damage. But the US Army Corps of Engineers planned to inspect highway bridges in Marion, Lynn, and Lane counties as a precaution.

Gana Pursley, a geophysicist with the Geological Survey, said the Lacombe earthquake was the result of a “reverse fault” in which “one fault was pushed to the other side of the fault.”

The epicenter was shallow at a depth of about eight miles.

“This is a good-sized earthquake for that area,” Bursley said.

The Geological Survey is hosting an online survey to allow people to report their experiences with the earthquake.

The most recent earthquake near this scale occurred on July 4, 2015. It was on a scale of 4.1 about 10 miles east of Springfield. Geological Survey records show that since 2000, the strongest earthquakes in Oregon occurred off the coast in 2004 – magnitude 4.9 from Yachts in July and 4.7 offshore from Newport a month later.

Friday’s earthquake comes about two weeks before the annual earthquake drills involving schools, government agencies and businesses.

The Great Oregon ShakeOut is Thursday, October 20, with a workout planned for 10:20 a.m. The state showed that as of Friday, 31,513 people — mostly students — have registered to participate in Marion County with another 7,249 registered in Polk County.

The website allows people to register and get training materials that can be accessed here.
