NHS Trust launches several reviews after Newsnight investigation into ‘mob-like’ leadership

A recent Newsnight investigation revealed what whistleblowers described as “mafia-like” leadership at one of England’s biggest and worst hospital trusts, University Hospitals Birmingham. Current and former clinicians there told us of a “culture of punishment” where staff are intimidated into raising concerns about patient safety. Following our reports, three separate reviews have now been announced by the NHS trust, which serves two million patients across four hospitals in Birmingham. Politicians are now calling for an independent inquiry similar to the Mid-Staffs scandal. A spokeswoman for University Hospitals Birmingham said: “We welcome the support that is being put in place and look forward to working positively and constructively with colleagues across the NHS. “This will build on the work being done across the UHB to understand the issues highlighted.
