TOKYO, Jan. 22 (press Jiji) — The Tokyo metropolitan government will give out seismic circuit breakers to local residents in areas filled with old wooden houses to reduce the risk of fire in the event of a major earthquake.

In the upcoming 2023 draft budget, the metropolitan government will include 2 billion yen for distributing the device that automatically cuts power when a major earthquake strikes to about 320,000 households in the year starting in April.

Seismic breakers are priced around 5,000 yen per unit for the types that plug into power outlets. They are designed to prevent fires caused by heaters and other equipment when power is restored after an earthquake-induced outage.

The eastern and southern parts of the 23 densely populated special wards in Tokyo are vulnerable to fires due to the many wooden buildings in them.

According to the metropolitan government’s estimates that were revised last year, a major earthquake in Tokyo could cause fires that burned about 120,000 buildings and killed about 2,500 people in the Japanese capital, especially in the Adachi, Edogawa, and Ota wards that have many wooden houses.
