Three dead and more than 800 injured in the Iran earthquake

TEHRAN: At least three people were killed and more than 800 injured in a 5.9-magnitude earthquake in northwest Iran.

About 60 seriously injured people are undergoing emergency surgery in nearby hospitals, the local health authority said, and almost all of them are now out of danger, according to state broadcaster IRIB.

Iranian media reported on Saturday evening that the epicenter of the quake was in the town of Choy in West Azerbaijan Province. According to reports, many buildings were damaged in the Chuy district and dozens of other localities in the border area with Turkey.

Local authorities said the area was shaken by 12 aftershocks overnight. According to the Center for Geographical Research in Potsdam, the quake occurred at a depth of 10 kilometers at around 9.44 pm (1814 GMT) on Saturday evening, the German news agency (dpa) reported.

The Iranian government immediately dispatched Red Crescent rescue workers to the affected areas. Fearing more aftershocks, more than 70,000 families were forced to spend the night outdoors despite the bitter cold.

An earthquake also occurred in the same area on January 18, with at least 120 people injured and hundreds of buildings damaged. – Bernama
