6.8-magnitude earthquake hits Ecuador and Peru, killing several people – DW – 03/19/2023

A 6.8-magnitude earthquake struck southern Ecuador and northern Peru at 12:12 noon local time (1712 UTC/GMT) on Saturday, killing at least 14 people.

The epicenter was about 80 kilometers south of Ecuador’s second largest city, Guayaquil, and about 10 kilometers from the city of Palau in the province of Guayas.

Other cities such as Quito, Manabi and Manta also felt tremors.

Guillermo Lasso, the president of Ecuador, said the situation had “concerned the population”. He asked that people remain calm in a tweet.

Laso said he plans to travel to El Oro on Saturday.

What do we know so far?

Risk Management Minister Cristian Torres said in an interview with Ecuadorian radio that 11 people died in El Oro, the coastal state, and one person in the mountainous state of Azuay.

Torres said the victim in Cuenca, in the Andean region of Azuay, was traveling in a car when he was crushed by the rubble of an apartment building.

In the town of Machala, a two-storey house collapsed trapping an unknown number of people inside.

Ecuador’s emergency response agency said firefighters were working to rescue those still trapped. The country’s national police were working to assess the damage.

Power and telephone lines were reportedly down in some places, making the work of emergency crews even more dangerous.

Three tunnels were closed in the city of Guayaquil, which has a population of three million. People gathered in the streets after the earthquake and many objects were reported to have fallen inside their homes.

There were no reports of deaths or injuries in northern Peru, despite the collapse of the old walls of military barracks in the northern region of Tumbes.

In 2016, 600 people died in the aftermath of an earthquake in Ecuador.

The Ecuadorian Navy has ruled out the threat of a tsunami.
