Just a day after an earthquake struck just outside New York City, a new quake struck New York Friday night followed by another somewhat stronger earthquake northeast over the US-Canada border in Ontario today. Unlike the first earthquake north of New York City that spawned hundreds of reports to the USGS website and “Did you feel it?” Reporting tool, these last two earthquakes were not felt and did not cause damage or injuries.

Last night, at 10:57 p.m., a 1.6-magnitude earthquake struck Rodman near Watertown, New York. There have been several earthquakes in this part of New York State for many weeks now, the strongest being a magnitude 3.8 event that occurred on February 7th.

According to the Northeastern States Emergency Consortium (NESEC), New York is a state with a very long history of seismic activity that has hit all parts of the state. Since the first earthquake recorded on December 19, 1737, New York has had more than 550 earthquakes centered within its state borders up to 2016. It also experienced strong ground shaking from earthquakes centered in neighboring US states and Canadian provinces. Most of the earthquakes in New York occurred in the greater New York City area, in the Adirondack Mountains region, and in the western part of the state.

While many of the earthquakes that hit New York are as weak or mild as the current ones, some were just as devastating. Of the 551 earthquakes recorded between 1737 and 2016, 5 were considered “damaging”: 1737, 1929, 1944, 1983 and 2002.

While most of the earthquakes that hit New York have been in the northern part of the state, New York City has also experienced devastating earthquakes over the years. At about 10:30 pm on December 18, 1737, an unknown earthquake of magnitude 5.2 struck New York City. This earthquake damaged some chimneys in the city. On August 10, 1884, another earthquake of magnitude 5.2 struck. This earthquake caused chimneys and plaster to crack, windows to shatter, and items to be thrown off shelves not only in New York City, but throughout the surrounding cities of New York and New Jersey as well. The shaking from the 1884 earthquake was felt as far west as Toledo, Ohio and as far east as Penobscot Bay, Maine. Some have also reported feeling it in Baltimore, Maryland.

In addition to the New York quakes, the USGS also reported that one struck the province of Ontario, Canada this morning at 7:36 am. The magnitude 2.1 event struck south and west of Perth, just north and west of the most recent earthquake in New York.

Unlike physical insurance agencies, websites don't have a specific schedule and they are available at any time. Drivers that have busy working schedules, can compare quotes from anywhere and at any time, even at midnight. Multiple choices. Almost all insurance providers, no matter if they are well-known brands or just local insurers, have an online presence. Online quotes will allow policyholders the chance to discover multiple insurance companies and check their prices. Drivers are no longer required to get quotes from just a few known insurance companies. Also, local and regional insurers can provide lower insurance rates for the same services. Accurate insurance estimates. Online quotes can only be accurate if the customers provide accurate and real info about their car models and driving history. Lying about past driving incidents can make the price estimates to be lower, but when dealing with an insurance company lying to them is useless. Usually, insurance companies will do research about a potential customer before granting him coverage. Online quotes can be sorted easily.
